A hopeful treatment for childhood cancer with stem cells

Today we want to share with you an issue that worries many families, that of childhood cancer. It is a hard disease that many children suffer from around the world. Hope comes from the hand of science, today there are several effective drugs, however, it is intended to go a step further and find a less aggressive, more effective treatment that provides a short-term solution. We talk about stem cells taken from umbilical cord blood as a treatment for childhood cancer.

According to the data of the Spanish Federation of Parents with children with cancer, childhood cancer is the leading cause of death in children under 14 years of age, indeed, these associations affirm that 1,400 new cases are diagnosed each year.

Luis Madero, Head of the Onco-hematology Service of the Niño Jesús University Hospital in Madrid explains the following: “the novelties in the treatment of childhood cancer do not include new drugs since those currently used are effective, however, we must talk about the importance of cell therapies that have been incorporated in recent years ”. To which he adds: “The challenges in the treatment of this disease go through use less intensive therapies in low-risk patients, that is, to cure them with the least therapeutic effort ”.

Let's now look at some cases in which cell treatment has been of great help to eliminate cancer in children.

Recently, a most encouraging piece of news broke out. Little Jenson Wrigh, just 9 years old, after having faced cancer twice, received the great news that he was cured. Victory in the battle against the disease was conquered thanks to the umbilical cord that was frozen and that was donated to the child's treatment. Jenson was diagnosed at age 4 with leukemia and even after nine months of intensive chemotherapy, the cancer returned. Two years after starting stem cell treatment, Jenson received the news that he is completely cured.

His mother, Carolyn, said the following words: "We are very lucky. Jenson really didn't understand what was wrong with him. It was amazing when they said he was cured and that they didn't want to see him again. Now he's like any other kid his age"Surely you, too, have been excited to read it, and it is a life expectancy for many children and their families that umbilical cord stem cell therapy serves as an effective treatment for childhood cancer.

On the other hand, a few years ago, a girl with cancer of the nervous system managed to survive thanks to the transplant of their own blood taken from the umbilical cord at birth. Frances Everall suffered from neuroblastoma, that is, cancer of the nervous system, thanks to the transplant of her own umbilical cord blood, her life was no longer in danger. Said blood is rich in hematopoietic stem cells, which is used for hematopoietic transplantation. The results were most favorable.

At this point, it is time to do a brief review of the treatment avenues that cell therapy opens up.

Joanne Kurtzberg, president of the Cord Blood Association and a great researcher in this field comments: “I predict that the use of umbilical cord blood cells as cell therapies in the emerging field of regenerative medicine, currently in its infancy, will emerge as one of the great advances in novel therapies in medicine for the next decade ”.

The enormous potential offered by umbilical cord stem cells to treat diseases such as childhood cancer, Parkinson's disease, Crohn's disease, Alzheimer's, cerebrovascular accidents and traumatic brain injuries, among many others, is currently being studied. Providing like this health insurance in childhood and adult life.
